Breathe and Win

A secret to improving your performance in Powerlifting

José M. Olea 23/10/2023

Most lifters face the same inner battle on important training days—those heavy sessions when your mind seems to want you to fail, and you feel like leaving before even trying. If you can’t learn to control those thoughts, the battle is already lost.

Your chances of success drop significantly.

Just Breathe

It might sound silly, but it’s the opposite. Learning to breathe in tough situations has helped me get in the zone and achieve my goals on days when I thought I couldn’t.

Focus on how the air enters through your nose, the temperature and speed of your breath. Feel how your abdomen expands as you inhale and deflates as you exhale. Repeat this for a few cycles and notice how your nerves begin to fade.

Flip the Switch

Once you’ve managed to calm the nerves that were eating you up, flip the switch. Look at the bar and get ready to attack. Start to breathe faster and tell yourself you're going to crush it. Lock in that killer mindset and get ready for battle.

This is what I feel when I enter “the zone”—what's known as the “flow state.” That’s when I know the movement is mine.

Some coaches believe that your environment is so important, it can matter even more than the actual training plan.
