Lift with Intent in Powerlifting: Improve Technique and Performance

You show up at the gym and it’s an easy day — squats for low reps at RPE 5 or around 60% of your 1RM. You start thinking it’s just a light training day, something you just need to get done, but you’re not really into it. You get under the bar and it feels heavier than expected. You move slower, feel stiffer. You tell yourself it doesn’t matter — you’ll focus on the heavy day.

Then the heavy day comes. You warm up well, crank up the music to get hyped... but it doesn’t work. You feel slow, the bar feels heavy, and you miss your lift. No spark.

WHAT IS INTENTIONALITY?

Intention is the relationship between what you want to achieve, your actions, and your thoughts. Aligning your goals with your actions in a consistent and coherent way. Intention goes beyond simply thinking about something. You have to commit. If you don’t, you’ll be like the typical gym-goer who pays the monthly fee and thinks they’ll get strong just by showing up — year after year.

It requires everything to be aligned.

GET INVOLVED

Use light training days to move better technically, add more explosiveness, control the descent better, follow the rules more strictly, pause the bench with a clear margin…

If a weight is supposed to move at RPE 6, aim to move it like it’s RPE 5 — try to be better.This will help you feel sharp on the important days, leave nothing to chance, and take responsibility.
