You’ve probably come across it in some self-help book or in a cryptobro podcast: “you need to show attitude in life so no one walks all over you.” There’s some truth in that message.

Our social dynamics often rely on the image we project to others. Some people want to look aggressive so they’re not underestimated. Others act like they know it all to dominate others. Some are shy, but they strive to become leaders by overcoming that shyness and showing character.

When I started this sport, I was someone who kept to myself, avoiding attention. I considered myself introverted. But I realized I had to change that in order to grow as an athlete.

PREY OR PREDATOR

Character is a key factor in powerlifting that must be trained and developed.

It’s normal to feel doubt, nerves or fear when going for a new PR. Learning to control those feelings and use them to your advantage is fundamental.

Use internal messages like “I can do this”—remind yourself of past moments when fear crept in but you overcame it. That will build your confidence, and you’ll begin to show it more and more.

“If you don’t have confidence, you’ll always find a way not to win.”

ENVIRONMENT

I could say a lot about the environment, but one quote that stuck with me is: “If you walk with the lame, you’ll limp”—I heard it from the legendary Louie Simmons.

Surrounding yourself with people who have similar goals will help you build character. Receiving support in tough moments will reinforce the way you act, and that builds consistency over time.

Some coaches even believe the environment is more important than the training program itself.

MUSIC

Use music that fires you up, that gets you into the zone and silences all doubts. This is also a great tool for those who train alone.Avoid constantly checking your phone while training.
