Online Strength and Conditioning Coach for MMA

How to improve your strength, power, and endurance without getting injured

José M. Olea 07/04/2026

If you practice MMA, you know that the problem is usually not technical talent. The problem is arriving at the fight whole, strong, and without aches. And that is where physical preparation comes in.

In this article, I explain exactly what a physical preparation specialist in MMA does, what the real benefits of working with an online one are, and how to know if you are ready to take that step.

What does a physical preparation coach for MMA do?

An MMA physical preparation coach is not a gym trainer. Their job is not to generally get you in shape: it is to design a training system that complements your technical work on the mat, in the ring, or in the octagon.

This includes:

Without structured physical preparation, most fighters train too much or too little, at the wrong time, and arrive at the competition running on fumes.

Why does online physical preparation work for fighters?

A few years ago, the idea of having an online S&C coach for MMA sounded strange. Today, it is the norm for athletes of all levels, from recreational to professional competitors.

The reasons are clear:

Total flexibility. Your camp has its own rhythm. A good online coach adapts strength and conditioning sessions to your technical training, ensuring they do not conflict.

Real monitoring. With WhatsApp, video technical analysis, and Google Sheets logs, online monitoring can be as close as, or closer than, in-person training.

Specialization. Not just any coach understands the demands of MMA. A specialized coach knows exactly what a fighter needs in each phase: off-season, during camp, and on fight week.

Affordable cost. Having a high-level S&C coach no longer requires living in a big city or paying elite fees.

The three most common problems that physical preparation in MMA solves

1. Arriving at the fight injured or tired

This is the most frequent issue. MMA camps are brutal by nature: high volume, high intensity, and the body accumulates fatigue. Without intelligent load management, it is only a matter of time before something breaks down.

A good S&C coach schedules strength sessions to complement technical work, controls fatigue week-to-week, and applies a proper taper in the final weeks so you arrive at the weigh-in with your body at its peak

2. Lacking power in the final rounds

Endurance in MMA is not just cardio. It is power endurance: the capacity to keep hitting hard, wrestling strong, and moving fast when you have three or five rounds on you.

This is trained specifically, with conditioning protocols that go far beyond doing rounds on the bag or sprints on the treadmill.

3. A poorly managed weight cut

Arriving at the weigh-in with too much fat mass and too little muscle makes the cut more aggressive and recovery worse. Well-oriented physical preparation in the preceding months gradually improves body composition, which makes the final weeks' cut more manageable and recovery between the weigh-in and the fight much more effective.

What is the process for working with an online S&C coach for MMA?

The process varies depending on the coach, but in my case it works like this:

Initial evaluation. We analyze your strength level, injury history, fight calendar, and the days available for strength and conditioning training.

Personalized programming. Each week you receive your plan adapted to what you have trained technically, your current form, and the time remaining until the next fight. There are no generic templates.

Daily monitoring via WhatsApp. Any question, adjustment, or technical video analysis is resolved within the day. Monitoring is not weekly or monthly: it is continuous.

Real-time adjustments. If your technical coach adds more load one week, we adjust it. If you have an ache, we modify it. The programming is dynamic and adapts.

Who is online S&C coaching for MMA suitable for?

This service is a good fit if:

It doesn't matter if you are from MMA, boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, or kickboxing. The principles of physical preparation adapt to any combat discipline.
